The Bigger Picture

The following video is a TV spot aired by T-Mobile in the United Kingdom as part of an advertising campaign.

How many times have we come to a conclusion about a situation based on partial information? It’s understandable that the people shown in the video were reacting without opening the parking ticket envelope, but that reaction was based on historical experience, not current information. Do you notice how their demeanour completely changes once they open the envelope? Do you think those people would have been angry had they known from the beginning what was contained in the envelope?

It is the responsibility and duty of a leader to gather all available information in any given situation before reacting or making a snap decision that could prove to be the wrong one. Without the big picture, how can an accurate assessment be made, proper conclusions drawn, and effective responses be enacted? This doesn’t mean getting bogged down with detail, but it does mean doing due diligence and making sure the complete situation is clear and observed. It’s a good thing to go with gut instinct and acknowledge past experiences, but to do so blindly is foolish.

“Boom! Welcome to Brighton!”

(PS – The music used in this video is one of the best songs ever written. Nicely done, T-Mobile!)
